COOL SAVINGS
***REBATE PROGRAM EXTENDED***
NOW ENDS DECEMBER 31, 2010
The Cool Savings Rebate Program provides you with the opportunity to help you do your part to reduce Ontario’s electricity consumption while saving money through rebates on the purchase of energy-efficient heating and cooling products and services, as well as on your electricity bill.
When you need to have your heating and/or cooling equipment replaced, you can help by investing in systems that meet or exceed the ENERGY STAR® standard for energy efficiency. Another way to help achieve this is to use a programmable thermostat to adjust your household temperature at night and when you are away from your home. These steps can reduce your heating and cooling costs dramatically, plus you’re doing something good for the environment.
Have an existing central air conditioning (CAC) system? Make sure you have it serviced each year by a qualified technician to ensure your system runs as efficiently as possible. This will help you use less electricity and help the environment, as well as protecting your investment in your central air conditioning system.
The Cool Savings Rebate Program is being offered to Ontario residents with existing central heating and cooling systems. Rebates are available for residents who replace an existing CAC system with one that meets or exceeds the ENERGY STAR® standard for CAC systems, who install a qualified furnace or air handler with a fully variable speed electronically commutated motor (ECM). Rebates are also available for those who have a programmable thermostat installed by a technician, or for those who have a tune-up on an existing central air conditioner.
The rebates are:
A $250 rebate to homeowners for the purchase of a replacement ENERGY STAR-qualified central air conditioning system, heat pump or ductless split system primarily designed for residential use, which is single phase and under 5 Tons (NOTE: ENERGY STAR criteria = minimum 14.5 SEER and 12.0 EER);

Home Renovation Tax Credit
Home renovations are smart investments in the long term value of a home and also create economic activity by increasing the demand for labour, building materials and other goods. Renovations can also reduce energy consumption and the long-term cost of owning a home.
To provide some $3 billion of much-needed fiscal stimulus and encourage investments in Canada’s housing stock, Budget 2009 implements a temporary Home Renovation Tax Credit (HRTC).
The HRTC will apply to eligible home renovation expenditures for work performed, or goods acquired, after January 27, 2009 and before February 1, 2010, pursuant to agreements entered into after January 27, 2009. The temporary nature of the credit will provide an immediate incentive for Canadians to undertake new renovations or accelerate planned projects.
The HRTC can be claimed for renovations and enduring alterations to a dwelling, or the land on which it sits.
The 15-per-cent credit may be claimed on the portion of eligible expenditures exceeding $1,000, but not more than $10,000, meaning that the maximum tax credit that can be received is $1,350.
The credit can be claimed on eligible expenditures incurred on one or more of an individual’s eligible dwellings. Properties eligible for the HRTC include houses, cottages and condominium units that are owned for personal use.
Renovation costs for projects such as finishing a basement or re-modelling a kitchen will be eligible for the credit, along with associated expenses such as building permits, professional services, equipment rentals and incidental expenses.
Routine repairs and maintenance will not qualify for the credit. Nor will the cost of purchasing furniture, appliances, audio-visual electronics or construction equipment.
Taxpayers can claim the HRTC when filing their 2009 tax return.
Eligibility for the HRTC will be family-based. For the purpose of the credit, a family is generally considered to consist of an individual, and where applicable, the individual’s spouse or common-law partner.
Family members will be able to share the credit.
Additional information on the Home Renovation Tax Credit will soon be available on Canada Revenue Agency’s website at www.cra-arc.gc.ca
